Disability employment in action: Philip's 5 years at Canyon Crossing Chiropractic

As National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) begins, Centerforce is celebrating a partnership that has quietly shaped the day-to-day rhythm of a local office for half a decade.
Philip has been a client at Centerforce for more than 15 years. For the past 5 years, he has brought that experience to Canyon Crossing Chiropractic in Puyallup as a support worker, performing routine facility maintenance and upkeep — organizing and cleaning work areas and supporting the overall appearance of the office.
A role built around strengths
What does Philip love the most about the job? Shredding papers, he said.
It's a small task with a big impact. For Philip, the role has offered something larger than a paycheck — it has been a steady source of independence and connection.
"It gives him the opportunity to get out and do other things and meet new people," Canyon Crossing Chiropractic owner Dr. Jacob Brown said.
Over the years, Philip has made new friends at work and through Centerforce activities, and he has grown into someone who can maintain and hold a paying job long-term. Looking ahead, he hopes to acquire more hours.
The support behind the success
Philip works closely with his Centerforce employment specialist Gloria, whose approach has made a lasting impression.
"She respects me as a person and after every shift she has a special treat for me," Philip said.
That relationship extends to the workplace itself. Dr. Brown said Gloria's regular presence has become part of what makes the partnership work.
"Gloria has initiated a spark every time she comes in," Dr. Brown said. "Our office feels good about employing someone who needed an opportunity."
What kind of support from Centerforce has mattered most in making the partnership successful: "Gloria's attitude," he said.
Partnership benefits
For Canyon Crossing Chiropractic, the day-to-day benefit is tangible. Philip's work has relieved the burden of mid-day cleaning, freeing up time and attention for the rest of the team. And the value has shown up in other ways — in morale, in culture and in the simple satisfaction of showing up for someone who needed the chance.
"It has been uplifting, affordable and serves a practical purpose," Dr. Brown said of the experience, offering a message to other businesses considering a similar partnership.
